About and Contact
With a passion for American craft beer and an interest in the culture of drinking, John Holl has spent the last several years traveling the country chronicling brewers and the imbibers who support them.
A journalist since 1996, John has worked as a reporter for the New York Times, the Star-Ledger and the Indianapolis Star. He has written about everything from hard crime to agriculture, covered the New Jersey State House and three gubernatorial and four United States senate elections.
While John occasionally wrote about beer and the brewing culture for the newspapers, in 2008 he dedicated his efforts to the full time pursuit of chronicling the ever-growing American craft beer scene. He is a regular contributor to the Ale Street News and CraftBeer.com. In 2010 John was named an associate editor of the Beer Connoisseur Magazine.
His regular column for NewJerseyNewsroom.com covers the beer happenings in the Garden State and he writes for AndesWines.com, a South American drinks site, about United States trends and culture. John has also written for the Wall Street Journal, Wine Enthusiast Magazine, All About Beer Magazine and Beverage World.
He keeps an archive of his work and posts occasional articles and musings on his website, TheBeerBriefing.com.
John has conducted exclusive interviews with some of craft beer’s most influential people, including Ken Grossman of Sierra Nevada Brewing Co., Jim Koch of the Boston Beer Co., Sam Calagione of Dogfish Head Ales, Greg Koch of Stone Brewing Co. and Garrett Oliver of the Brooklyn Brewery. John was also the first journalist in recent years to interview craft beer pioneer Jack McAuliffe and was on hand to witness McAuliffe’s first brew day in nearly 30 years.
John was also a finalist judge for the 2010 Samuel Adams Long Shot Competition.
Having visited more than 700 breweries in the United States and across the world, John has been privileged to learn about the brewing process from some of the most dedicated, passionate and knowledgeable people in the business.
In March 2011 Stackpole Books released John’s first book Indiana Breweries, a guide to the craft beer scene in the Hoosier State. This will be followed by the release of Massachusetts Breweries in 2012. John also contributed more than a dozen entries to the forthcoming Oxford Companion to Beer.
An award winning journalist, John has appeared on NBC’S Weekend Today in New York, News 12 New Jersey and has been a guest on Beer Session Radio on the Heritage Radio Network. He has been quoted in beer-themed articles on Patch.com and has hosted several beer events throughout out the New York metropolitan area.
In February 2011 John began filing regular beer reports for NBC’s New York Nonstop channel.
Always in search of a new place to visit, a different beer to try and interesting people to meet, John is available for writing assignments or interviews.
